Hello everybody, I hope that we are having a great afternoon. Good start to the school year. I am sure some of you guys have been in school for a while now. The tool we are going to be exploring today is our fast grade tool, definitely a great easy way to progress through student work, leave them comments, feedback, and definitely wish it was a tool that I had when I was in the classroom.
I am Danielle Santilli, a code specialist here at CodeHS. I used CodeHS in the classroom when I was teaching. I taught computer science for about 8 years or so and I am joined with Stephanie and Carlos. They are going to be manning the chat for me, the Q&A. Please if you have questions or comments, go ahead and join in. I want to make sure that we get any questions or conversations pointed out.
CodeHS is a comprehensive platform for teaching computer science. We have resources spanning K through high school and K through 12, so please check out the vast array of curriculum options we have. One thing I love about CodeHS is it is a web-based computer science curriculum. You do not need to install anything on your computers, anything like that. It is just really easy to pull up and utilize. We have online and offline professional development, our webinars here as part of that, and a full software platform for teacher tools and resources.
Let us dig into the Fast Grade app. Fast Grade is our pro tool, so it is available for our pro teachers and it is a really nice, easy, efficient way to grade student submissions. You have everything you need in one place. You get that one-click grading. You can easily see the student work, compare it with the solution code, and apply that quick grade. We have some suggested grade features, ways you can send messages to students. Maybe you want to give students a second chance at an assignment. You can send it back to them so they can get a second try to get those points. We also have some filter options where you can filter by assignment, by section, by progress, so you really have control over what it is that you are looking at and what it is that you are grading.
There are two different ways to access fast grade. Along that left-hand side under the grading tab, we do have a fast grade tool to go directly there. You also can navigate through code review and use that app here. When you are looking and going through using this tool, it actually goes pretty quickly. It is pretty efficient here. You will see the student name, the name of the assignment, the section that they are in, the due date, when they submitted it, the current grade, and then we can compare the student code with the solution code.
Some nice ways to progress through your activities and assignments include using canned responses. If you find yourself saying the same things over and over again, you can add custom messages in the custom canned response, like "Great job, keep up the good work" or "Take another look at the directions and try again." This is a nice way to quickly add positive feedback to students without having to type it out every time.
Practical strategies include triage first and personalize second, getting through the easy calls first and spending more time on the trickier ones where you really want to leave personalized comments. Use those status filters, grade need work, so that you can prioritize what you are seeing when you are looking at your student submissions, and keep the bar the same with the side-by-side student code and solution code comparison to ensure consistent grading.
