CodeHS offers robust computer science courses and CTE pathways aligned to state and national standards such as CSTA, ISTE, College Board Advanced Placement, and more.

Students are introduced to various topics in CS, including: text-based coding languages, web design, digital citizenship, networks, and game design. In the final year of this pathway, students take an introductory coding course in Python that will prepare them for high school CS courses.

What courses are in the CodeHS middle school computer science pathways?

CodeHS middle school pathways are three-year sequences running 6th through 8th grade. Current options include Computer Science Explorations, which covers programming with Karel and Tracy, web design, game design, and how the internet works; a Python pathway built on Tracy the Turtle; and a Digital Citizenship pathway, plus state-aligned versions and more in the course catalog.

Which middle school computer science pathway should we start with?

It depends on how much time you have and where students are headed. Computer Science Explorations is the broad survey, covering programming, web design, game design, and digital citizenship across three years. The Python pathway goes deeper on text-based coding for schools that want students writing Python by 8th grade. Digital Citizenship is a much shorter option focused on online safety and digital literacy. The CodeHS team can help you map a sequence to your schedule.

Do middle school students code with blocks or type real code?

Both, and teachers decide. Karel and Tracy the Turtle activities can be built in a drag-and-drop block editor, and teachers can turn block coding on or off for a whole section or for an individual student. The middle school pathways build toward text-based Python, so students who start in blocks finish the sequence writing real code.

Can we mix courses from different pathways or build our own?

Yes. CodeHS pathways are recommended sequences, not fixed tracks. Schools can swap courses between pathways, reorder modules and lessons, write their own assignments, or build a sequence from scratch out of the CodeHS catalog. The shorter Digital Citizenship courses are often dropped into another pathway rather than run on their own, and teachers can adjust the flow for one section or one student.

How do CodeHS middle school pathways prepare students for high school computer science?

CodeHS middle school pathways end with text-based programming, most often Python with Tracy the Turtle, so students arrive in 9th grade already writing real code instead of starting over. They are designed to line up with the high school pathways, so a district can run both and know the 8th grade year leads directly into an introductory high school course or an AP track.
