MODULES - 11

  • Digital Citizenship and Cyber Hygiene

    Students learn topics on Internet etiquette, how to stay safe on the web, potential effects of digital footprints, how to protect their information, and the implications of cyberbullying.

  • Programming With Karel

    Karel helps teach foundational skills in programming by simplifying JavaScript to four simple commands. Using these commands, students solve increasingly difficult problems and explore how complex programming languages can be developed from simple commands.

  • Karel Challenges

    Students take all the foundational concepts from Karel to solve programming challenges.

  • Networks and the Internet

    Students explore the structure and design of the internet, and how this design affects the reliability of network communication, the security of data, and personal privacy.

  • JavaScript and Graphics

    Students learn the basics of JavaScript, including variables, user input, mathematics, and basic graphics.

  • Graphics Challenges

    Students learn how to pair program while tackling more challenging tasks with JavaScript graphics.

  • JavaScript Control Structures

    Students learn how to use control structures such as if/else statements and loops to make more advanced programs in JavaScript.

  • Control Structures Challenges

    Students take all the foundational concepts from the Control Structures unit to solve some programming challenges.

  • Functions, Events, and Lists

    Students learn to write reusable code with functions and parameters.

  • Final Project

    Students learn the theory and practice of user interface design. With rapid prototyping and user testing, they design and develop their own engaging web pages.

  • Computer Science Careers

    This module introduces students to potential career paths in the field of computer science.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standards does this course align to?

It covers all the concepts in the CSTA framework: algorithms and programming, computing systems, data and analysis, impacts of computing, and networks and the internet.

What language do students program in?

JavaScript. Students start with Karel, which reduces JavaScript to a few commands, then work through graphics, control structures, and functions, events and lists.

Do students need any programming experience first?

No. The course opens with Karel before any JavaScript syntax, and each unit has its own challenge set for students who move at different speeds.

How is this different from the EXS0100 and EXS0110 courses?

Those two are the middle school sequence at 8th grade, 90 hours each, split between Python programming and web design. This is the high school course: a full year at 140 hours in JavaScript, covering the whole CSTA framework on its own.

What does the course cover besides programming?

Networks and the internet, digital citizenship and cyber hygiene, and computer science careers, closing with a final project.

Is there extra material if a class moves quickly?

Yes. Extra Karel practice and puzzles, functions and parameters practice, extended user interaction for animation and games, extended array concepts and extended data structures all sit alongside the core sequence.

How long is the course?

About 140 contact hours, built to run across a full school year.
