UNITS - 8 (32 lessons)
Students review CS vocabulary, coordinate-plane animation, and drawing tools by creating deep sea creatures.
Students practice identifying computing system components and apply computational thinking to design a neighborhood.
Students use events and loops to build programs, compare and refine algorithms for efficiency, debug code, and create looping turtle graphics.
Students use conditionals, pseudocode planning, and operators to build a maze program, plan a quest, and create a coin-flip simulator.
Students use variables, comparison operators, and lists to control dance speeds, game endings, and a shopping simulator.
Students use clones to build interactive games, including an acorn-throwing game and an endless runner.
Students apply design thinking and multiple programming skills to build pinball and original games, design an app, and complete a data-driven inquiry project.
Students examine technology's cultural impact, learn about networks and cybersecurity, manage digital reputation and files, and use spreadsheet and productivity software for research.

5th grade students build advanced programs using events, algorithms, loops, conditionals, operators, variables, lists, and clones, with projects like turtle graphics, a quest program, a shopping simulator, and a throwing acorns game. They complete multi-day projects including a pinball game, a game of their own design, an app design, and a line graph inquiry project. Students also explore innovation, networks, digital reputation, cyberbullying, and cybersecurity, and use spreadsheets in a productivity software inquiry project.
Yes. Students learn to use spreadsheets with Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel and apply productivity tools in an inquiry project, so teachers can choose the version that matches the tools their school uses. Students will need access to those tools on a classroom device.
The course includes 36 lessons, each about 45 minutes long, providing a full year of instruction when taught once a week. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led using an "I do, we do, you do" format, and a self-paced option is also available. Optional review lessons at the start of the course are not counted in the 36 lessons.
No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. Optional review lessons at the start of the course help students who are new to CodeHop learn the basics before moving into grade-level content.
Texas Tech Apps: 5th Grade is aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Technology Applications. Lessons required to fully meet the standards are labeled in the course syllabus with the standards they address, and all Digital Literacy lessons are required because they cover essential non-programming computer science concepts.
