Tennessee Computer Science: 4th Grade

This course is aligned to TN standards and is designed to provide computer science instruction for Tennessee fourth grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes optional interdisciplinary lessons in math, science, ELA, and social studies to support cross-curricular integration.

UNITS - 8 (29 lessons)
Students refresh foundational skills including vocabulary, the coordinate plane, and basic programming concepts.
Students explore computing systems in depth, learn to spread positivity online, and apply computational thinking to design challenges.
Students create multiple algorithms for the same task, collaborate through pair programming, and practice debugging and decomposition.
Students use complex if/then/else conditionals to create underwater exploration programs and decision-driven games.
Students create variables to track scores in games, use clones to generate multiple moving objects, and create functions with inputs.
Students design custom music players using variables, operators, and conditionals, and apply design thinking to improve game accessibility for diverse users.
Students research and create persuasive PSAs, develop investigative questions and collect data, and explore basic cryptography concepts.
Students integrate coding with multi-digit multiplication, fractions, area/perimeter calculations, heat and the water cycle, storytelling, and cultural exploration.

4th graders learn clones to create multiple objects, use variables to track information, write functions with inputs, use complex conditionals for decision-making, and apply algorithms to solve problems.
Students design and create custom music players, make interactive games that track scoring, redesign games for accessibility, and build programs that model concepts across multiple subjects.
The course consists of 36 lessons, each approximately 45 minutes, taught once per week throughout a complete school year.
Students research topics to create Public Service Announcements, develop investigative questions, collect and analyze data, and learn basic cryptography and code-breaking skills.
