UNITS - 6 (35 lessons)
This module reviews core programming vocabulary, the coordinate plane, and drawing tools for creating custom sprites and backdrops.
This module builds foundational skills including computational thinking applied to designing a neighborhood, computing system troubleshooting, and keyboarding proficiency.
This module introduces event-based programming and debugging skills through a pizza-making program.
This module covers a broad range of digital literacy topics including data and file management, cybersecurity law, networking protocols, online collaboration, research and keyword evaluation skills, and ethical use of generative AI, culminating in research and productivity-software projects.
This module develops programming skills with loops, conditionals, operators, and functions through turtle graphics and games, culminating in a design-thinking accessibility project.
This module applies programming concepts across other subject areas, having students build programs that model science topics, civics, language arts, and math.

The course introduces 5th grade students to computer science and digital literacy using CodeHop, a block-based programming language. Students build programming skills like loops, conditionals, operators, and functions, develop digital citizenship skills including cybersecurity, research, and responsible AI use, and apply coding to math, science, ELA, and social studies.
The course is aligned to South Carolina 5th Grade Computer Science and Digital Literacy standards, with individual lessons also mapped to specific SC academic standards in math (5.PAFR, 5.NR.3.1), ELA (ELA.5.C.1.1, ELA.AOR.2.2, SL.5.5, and a 3.W.2 writing standard), and science (5-ESS1-1, 5-ESS3-1).

The course includes 25 standards-aligned lessons and 11 exploration lessons, each about 45 minutes long, for a total of roughly 36 hours. Teaching one lesson per week provides a full school year of material, though teachers can adapt the pace to fit their own schedule.
Students write and run programs in CodeHop, a block-based programming environment embedded directly in their CodeHS accounts, where they can create and debug interactive projects.
