UNITS - 5 (34 lessons)
Students build foundational computer skills, including logging in, keyboarding, and using computational thinking to sequence everyday tasks.
Students learn core programming concepts like events and sequences while using drawing tools to build simple, community-connected scenes.
Students develop digital literacy skills, from positive online behavior and networks to productivity tools like word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Students grow their programming skills with motion, timing, repeat loops, message events, and debugging while building interactive games.
Students apply coding to real-world topics across math, science, ELA, and social studies, from mapping and economics to telling time and music.

The course introduces 1st grade students to computer science and digital literacy using CodeHop, a block-based programming language. Students build on foundational computer skills, learn programming concepts like events, sequences, and loops, develop digital literacy skills including productivity tools and online safety, and apply coding to math, science, ELA, and social studies.
The course is aligned to South Carolina 1st Grade Computer Science and Digital Literacy standards, with individual lessons in the Interdisciplinary Exploration module also mapped to specific SC academic standards in math (1.OA, 1.NBT, 1.MD), ELA (1.SL, ELA.1.F), science (1-PS4, 1-ESS1), social studies (1.G, 1.E), and geometry.

The course includes 18 standards-aligned lessons and 19 exploration lessons, each about 45 minutes long, for a total of roughly 36 hours. Teaching one lesson per week provides a full school year of material, though teachers can adapt the pace to fit their own schedule.
Students write and run programs in CodeHopJr, a block-based programming environment embedded directly in their CodeHS accounts, where they can create and debug interactive projects.
