This course is designed to provide computer science instruction for New York 5th grade students. Students learn programming and principles of computer science including: computing systems, research, algorithms and programming, and computer safety.

UNITS - 9 (31 lessons)
Students get an optional refresher on CodeHop vocabulary, the coordinate plane, and drawing tools while building simple programs.
Students identify parts of a computing system and troubleshoot simple problems, then apply computational thinking to design a neighborhood.
Students compare and refine algorithms for efficiency and research a computer science innovator to create an informational program.
Students use loops and the pen tool to create turtle-graphics patterns and analyze and extend a mobile app game by modifying and adding code.
Students use conditionals and pseudocode to plan maze programs, use operators to build a coin-flip simulator, and practice giving appropriate attribution when creating or remixing programs.
Students use variables, comparison operators, and lists to control dance elements, build game-ending mechanics, and simulate shopping, then apply these skills to an inquiry project displaying data as a line graph.
Students use clones to build a throwing-acorns game and learn about classes, objects, and randomizers to vary characteristics of game objects.
Students apply functions and math skills to design a house using area and perimeter, use the design thinking process to design an app addressing a user need, and collaborate globally on a digital tourism advertisement.
Students learn to recognize and report cyberbullying, manage their digital reputation and privacy, explore cybersecurity through an animated program and a cryptography escape room, evaluate technology's cultural impacts, cite sources properly, compare network connection types, and analyze the ethics of AI products.
