FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in Arkansas Computer Science: 3rd Grade?

Third graders program in the CodeHop Playground using parallel sequences, animations, loops, conditionals, variables, comparison operators, and lists, then apply these skills to build a digital pet and collaborate on a community event program. The course also covers Google and Microsoft productivity tools, computing systems and networks, online safety and cybersecurity, and evaluating and graphing data.

Which standards is this third grade computer science course aligned to?

The course is aligned to the Arkansas K-4 Computer Science Standards. Lessons that are required to fully meet the state standards list their standard codes beside the lesson title in the course syllabus.

Do students need prior coding experience for the third grade course?

No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. It opens with a lesson on logging in and using the CodeHop Playground, the block-based environment students use in grades 3 and up.

How long does the course take and how long is each lesson?

The course includes 36 lessons, each about 45 minutes long, designed to be taught across one school year. Concepts spiral across grade levels, so students can revisit and build on them the following year even if every lesson is not completed.

Does the third grade course teach online safety and digital citizenship?

Yes. The Safety & Responsibility unit teaches students to recognize online dangers and cyberbullying, understand their digital footprint, learn cybersecurity basics, practice good digital etiquette, and create a plan for balancing screen time.
