UNITS - 12 (36 lessons)
This module offers an optional review of foundational ScratchJr programming skills including navigating the interface, events, loops, and message events before 2nd grade content begins.
This module builds computational thinking skills by identifying patterns and sequencing steps in a school-day routine.
This module builds sequencing and event skills using the grid, an interactive tap-a-mole game, and debugging practice.
This module expands loop skills through pattern-following, creating a timer, incorporating peer feedback, and designing algorithms to move characters along a path.
This module builds on message events to control program flow, model a cycle, navigate between pages, debug errors, and apply the design process.
This module has students combine coding blocks, events, loops, and messages to build a racing game and a moving targets game.
This module explores how computers work and how networks connect devices to share information.
This module covers digital citizenship topics including digital footprints, cyberbullying, and responsible technology use.
This module builds data literacy skills through investigative surveys, understanding data storage, and choice-based research projects.
This module explores how computing shapes careers like fashion design and how technology changes the way people live, work, and play.
This module introduces AI concepts through examples like AI assistants and AutoDraw's use of a classifier to recognize and suggest drawings.
This module prepares students for 3rd grade by transitioning them to the CodeHop block editor and introducing variables.

2nd grade students use loops, message events, pages, and grids to build more complex programs, and practice debugging, giving feedback, and the design process. They apply these skills in multi-day game projects, including a racing game and a moving targets game. Students also learn how computers and networks work, practice digital citizenship, collect and present survey data, explore how technology has changed the world, and see how AI learns to recognize drawings.
The course ends with lessons that move students from CodeHopJr to the full CodeHop Blocks editor used in 3rd grade and beyond. Students create programs with events and loops in the new editor and are introduced to variables by building a program that keeps score.
2nd Grade Computer Science includes 36 lessons, each about 45 minutes long, providing a full year of instruction when taught once a week. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led using an "I do, we do, you do" format, and a self-paced option is also available. The course mixes hands-on programming projects with unplugged activities, with module quizzes to check understanding. Optional review lessons at the start of the course can be used as warm-ups and are not counted in the 36 lessons. Teachers have flexibility in pacing, and the lessons required to fully meet CSTA standards are identified in the course syllabus.
No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. Optional review lessons at the start of the course help students who are new to CodeHop review events, loops, and message events before moving into 2nd grade content.
2nd Grade Computer Science is aligned to state computer science standards and CSTA standards.
