UNITS - 13 (41 lessons)
This module provides an optional refresher on logging into CodeHopJr and using the sequential Scout Adventures story to review adding characters, backgrounds, motion, and events.
This module builds computational thinking skills by identifying patterns and sequencing steps in an evening routine while also strengthening mouse skills.
This module builds sequencing and event skills through digital responsibility, hide-and-seek and sizing games, the design process, and debugging practice, culminating in a quiz.
This module introduces repeat loops and debugging through a butterfly-catching game.
This module teaches message events for character communication through a relay race, a Simon Says game, and a speed-based bouncing ball project.
This module introduces multi-page programs through a tapping game, a mini golf game, and a digital greeting card.
This module teaches the coordinate grid and end blocks through maze design and race programs.
This module has students plan and build an "About Me" program applying skills learned throughout the course.
This module introduces computing fundamentals including input/output, hardware and software, and how networks and the internet enable communication.
This module covers digital safety and citizenship topics including password protection, responsible technology use, and giving credit for others' work.
This module builds data literacy skills through collecting and visualizing data, conducting guided research, and identifying patterns and trends.
This module explores how computing devices and computer science careers affect everyday life and help solve community problems.
This module introduces AI concepts including how AI uses data to make decisions and how decision trees and patterns support classification.

1st grade students build on their programming skills using events, wait blocks, repeat loops, message events, pages, and grids to create games and animations such as a mini golf game, a Simon Says game, and a maze race. They practice the design process and debugging, and finish the programming units with a multi-page About Me project. Students also learn about computers and networks, create strong passwords, give credit for others' work, use data to make predictions, and explore what AI can and cannot do.
1st Grade Computer Science includes 36 lessons, each about 45 minutes long, providing a full year of instruction when taught once a week. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led using an "I do, we do, you do" format, and a self-paced option is also available. The course mixes hands-on programming projects with unplugged activities, with module quizzes to check understanding. Optional review lessons at the start of the course can be used as warm-ups and are not counted in the 36 lessons. Teachers have flexibility in pacing, and the lessons required to fully meet CSTA standards are identified in the course syllabus.
No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. Optional review lessons at the start of the course help students who are new to CodeHop learn the basics before moving into 1st grade content.
1st Grade Computer Science focuses on programming, with most lessons spent building block-based programs, animations, and games, along with lessons on computing systems, online safety, data, impacts of computing, and AI. 1st Grade Digital Literacy & AI focuses on digital skills such as productivity software, online safety, research, and AI, with less time spent on programming. Some lessons appear in both courses, so schools can choose the course that best fits their goals.
1st Grade Computer Science is aligned to state computer science standards and CSTA standards.
