UNITS - 8 (36 lessons)

  • Optional Review

Students review foundational programming concepts including events, loops, and message events using the CodeHopJr interface.

  • Getting Started

Students learn how computer components connect and work together, practice responsible technology use, and apply computational thinking to school routines.

  • Sequences & Events

Students debug sequences, use the grid and algorithms to move characters, explore a fashion-retail CS career, and build an interactive tap game.

  • Message Events

Students use message events to control program flow, model cycles, navigate between pages, examine technology's impact, and introduce variables for scorekeeping.

  • Loops

Students use loops to identify patterns, build and debug timers, animate an original story, and revise work based on peer feedback.

  • Culmination Projects

Students apply the design process along with events, loops, and messages to build original games and a data-driven program.

  • Digital Literacy

Students learn password safety, responsible digital citizenship, and how to research and present findings.

  • Optional Preparing for Next Year

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in Texas Tech Apps: 2nd Grade?

2nd grade students use the grid, message events, loops, and variables to build programs, practice debugging and giving feedback, and apply the design process in multi-day projects including a racing game, a moving targets game, a maze game, and a data project. They also learn how computer parts work together, explore how technology impacts the world, practice password safety and digital citizenship, and research questions they choose. The course ends with optional lessons that prepare students for the CodeHop Blocks editor used in 3rd grade.

How is the course structured?

The course includes 36 lessons, each about 45 minutes long, providing a full year of instruction when taught once a week. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led using an "I do, we do, you do" format, and a self-paced option is also available. Optional review lessons at the start of the course are not counted in the 36 lessons. Optional lessons at the end of the course introduce conditionals and the CodeHop Blocks editor to prepare students for 3rd grade.

Do students need prior experience to take this course?

No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. Optional review lessons at the start of the course help students who are new to CodeHop review events, loops, and message events before moving into 2nd grade content.

What standards is Texas Tech Apps: 2nd Grade aligned to?

Texas Tech Apps: 2nd Grade is aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Technology Applications. Lessons required to fully meet the standards are labeled in the course syllabus with the standards they address, and all Digital Literacy lessons are required because they cover essential non-programming computer science concepts.
