Florida Foundations of Computer Science: 1st Grade

This course is aligned to FL Foundations of Computer Science standards and is designed to provide computer science instruction for Florida 1st grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately weekly.

UNITS - 11 (55 lessons)

  • Optional Review

    Reviews foundational CodeHopJr skills through the story-driven Scout Adventures series, having students explore the programming interface, add and modify characters and backgrounds, and build sequences of motion blocks and events.

  • Getting Started

    Introduces computer basics such as input, output, hardware, and software, responsible technology use, and computational thinking concepts applied to everyday evening routines.

  • Sequences and Events

    Teaches students to build sequences and use event blocks to create scenes, drawings, and data visualizations, while also introducing debugging, digital responsibility, and math concepts like place value and algebraic thinking.

  • Optional Unplugged Loops Activities

    Uses unplugged coding card games to have students collaboratively sequence instructions with loops to move Scout through a maze, building intuition for loops before coding on the computer.

  • Loops

    Introduces repeat and forever loops, having students apply them to build a butterfly-catching game and a dance party animation that repeats actions.

  • Message Events

    Teaches students to use message events to coordinate communication between characters, applying the skill to a relay race, a Simon Says game, and original animated stories.

  • Pages

    Introduces multi-page programs using "go to page" blocks, applying the skill to a tapping game and math-focused programs involving story problems, shape partitioning, and number comparisons.

  • Grid

    Teaches students to use the grid feature to precisely position and move characters, applying it to design mazes, a race with an end block, and an arctic animation.

  • Culmination Project

    Culminates the module sequence with a River Crossing Game project in which students program obstacles and adjust difficulty using speed blocks.

  • Digital Literacy

    Builds digital literacy skills spanning keyboarding, responsible digital citizenship, an introduction to AI and machine learning, data storage concepts, software types, and guided research.

  • Interdisciplinary Connections (Supplemental)

    Provides supplemental cross-curricular coding projects connecting programming to math, science, ELA, and social studies topics such as time, shapes, adaptations, light and sound, moon phases, life cycles, punctuation, responsibility, economics, and mapping.
