FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in the Coding with Sphero course?

Students learn to program Sphero robots, starting with basic movement commands to drive to a target. They then use loops to navigate around obstacles in an underwater exploration and conditionals to control a robot's speed in a shark race. Students apply these skills in cross-curricular projects, programming a Sphero to retell events along an interactive timeline and to travel across a world map to find landmarks before a timer runs out.

Where do students write their code in the Coding with Sphero course?

Students program their robots in the Sphero Edu app rather than inside CodeHS, so they need access to the app on a classroom device. The course works with Sphero Mini and Sphero BOLT+ robots. CodeHS provides the lesson plans, slides, rubrics, and printable code instructions in English and Spanish.

What grade levels is Coding with Sphero designed for, and is prior experience needed?

Coding with Sphero is designed for grades 3-6. No prior Sphero experience is needed, since the first lesson introduces the robot and basic movement commands. Some later lessons assume students are already familiar with coding concepts like loops, conditionals, and variables.

How long does the Coding with Sphero course take?

The course includes five 45-minute lessons, totaling about 3 hours and 45 minutes of instruction.

What standards is Coding with Sphero aligned to?

Coding with Sphero lessons are aligned to many state computer science standards, and they also connect to Common Core English Language Arts.
