Coding with Finch Robot®
- Level Elementary School
- Number of Lessons 3
- Grade 3rd, 4th, 5th
This course introduces students to coding with Finch Robot® and integrates coding with math and ELA.
UNITS - 3 (3 lessons)
Students learn the Finch Robot's inputs and outputs and program its basic movements and lights.
Students use coding to model geometry concepts like area and perimeter.
Students work together to plan, program, and debug a robot that acts out a story.

Students learn the inputs and outputs of the Finch Robot and use move, turn, and light commands to program its movements, starting with a robot dance. They then apply coding to math by solving for the width and perimeter of rooms and programming the Finch to drive around them, and to ELA by collaboratively planning, programming, and debugging a story that the Finch acts out.
Students program the Finch Robot using block coding tools from BirdBrain Technologies, the company that makes the Finch, rather than inside CodeHS. You will need Finch Robots and devices that can connect to them. CodeHS provides the lesson plans, slides, rubrics, and printable code instructions.
Coding with Finch Robot is designed for grades 3-5. No prior Finch experience is needed, since the first lesson introduces the robot, though the math lesson assumes students are familiar with finding the area and perimeter of rectangles.
The course includes 3 lessons, totaling about 3 hours of instruction. The introduction and math lessons each take about 45 minutes, and the storytelling project takes about 90 minutes. Every lesson includes slides in both English and Spanish.
Coding with Finch Robot lessons are aligned to state computer science standards as well as the ISTE Standards for Students.
