FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in the Coding with Ozobot course?

Students learn to program Ozobot robots by drawing lines and color codes that tell the robot how to move, pause, and change direction. They start with basic color codes, move on to more advanced codes, and then apply their skills in cross-curricular projects, such as animating a science cycle and building an interactive timeline that retells a sequence of events.

Where do students write their code, and what materials are needed?

Students program Ozobots by drawing color codes on paper with markers rather than coding inside CodeHS, so most lessons do not require a computer. You will need Ozobot robots, paper, and markers in the Ozobot color code colors. One lesson also introduces Ozobot Classroom, Ozobot's online platform for additional lessons. CodeHS provides the lesson plans, slides, and rubrics, and most lessons include slides in both English and Spanish.

What grade levels is Coding with Ozobot designed for, and is prior experience needed?

Coding with Ozobot is designed for grades K-5, and no prior coding experience is needed. The first lesson introduces the robot and simple color codes, and later lessons build on those skills.

How long does the Coding with Ozobot course take?

The course includes four 45-minute lessons, about 3 hours of instruction, plus an introduction to the Ozobot Classroom lessons that teachers can add for more practice.

What standards is Coding with Ozobot aligned to?

Coding with Ozobot lessons are aligned to many state computer science standards, and they also connect to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core English Language Arts.
