Students first learn how to move around and interact with blocks in Minecraft: Education Edition. They then use block coding to program the Agent, a robot helper inside the game, building sequences of moves, using repeat loops to collect blocks during a beach cleanup, and using events to make a trail of flowers appear as their character walks.
Students write their code inside Minecraft: Education Edition using its built-in block coding tool, not inside CodeHS, so each student needs access to the app through a Minecraft: Education Edition subscription. CodeHS provides the lesson plans, slides, and rubrics that guide each activity, and several lessons use in-game lesson worlds from Minecraft Education.
The course is designed for elementary students in grades K-6. No prior coding or Minecraft experience is required, but students should be able to use a mouse and keyboard. The first lesson teaches basic Minecraft gameplay before students start coding.
The course includes 4 lessons, totaling about 3.5 hours of instruction. The introductory gameplay lesson takes about 75 minutes, and each of the three coding lessons takes about 45 minutes.
Yes. Every lesson includes ready-to-teach slides in both English and Spanish, and the coding lessons include printable code instructions in both languages.
