Students learn to program VEX robots using sequences of commands, then use their robots to explore math and science. With VEX 123, students solve addition and subtraction word problems, identify shape attributes, and explore patterns in living things. With VEX GO, students build their own robots and program them to convert measurements, follow lines and angles, and test how speed relates to energy.
Students program their robots using VEX's own tools rather than inside CodeHS. In the VEX 123 module, students program the robot with its built-in buttons, the VEX 123 Coder and coding cards, or the VEXcode 123 website. In the VEX GO module, students build robots from VEX GO kits and program them on the VEXcode GO website. CodeHS provides the lesson plans, slides, and rubrics that guide each activity.
You will need VEX 123 robots with Coders and coding cards for the VEX 123 module, and VEX GO kits for the VEX GO module. Because coding happens on VEX's platforms, students also need access to the VEXcode 123 and VEXcode GO websites. Every lesson includes ready-to-teach slides in both English and Spanish, along with links to VEX setup guides and build instructions.
The course includes 8 lessons, totaling about 10.5 hours of instruction. The VEX 123 module takes about 4.5 hours and the VEX GO module takes about 6 hours. Lessons range from 45 minutes to a 3-hour building and programming project, and each module can be taught on its own.
VEX Robotics lessons are aligned to many state computer science standards, and they also connect to Common Core Math and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
