What Students Will Learn

UNITS - 4 (14 lessons)

  • Introduction to Bee-Bot®

Students learn the basics of programming a floor robot by giving it directional commands and planning simple sequences.

  • Math with Bee-Bot®

Students use coding to practice early math skills like counting, patterns, measurement, shapes, and number combinations.

  • Science with Bee-Bot®

Students program Bee-Bot® to explore science concepts such as weather, living things, and forces, then apply their skills to a hands-on engineering challenge.

  • Resources

Students extend their Bee-Bot® skills through additional activities their teacher designs using included guides and ideas.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in the Coding with Bee-Bot course?

Students learn to program Bee-Bot, a child-friendly floor robot, by entering sequences of forward, backward, and turn commands, planning routes, and debugging their programs. They apply these coding skills to early math topics such as counting, patterns, comparing length, shapes, and making ten, and to science topics such as seasons, weather, the needs of living things, pushes and pulls, and changing environments. The course ends with a STEM project where students design a device that helps Bee-Bot clean up trash in a park.

What grade level is Coding with Bee-Bot designed for, and do students need prior coding experience?

Coding with Bee-Bot is designed for kindergarten students, and no prior coding experience is needed. The course begins with an introduction to Bee-Bot's basic movements, and later lessons build on the sequencing skills students learn in those first lessons.

How long does the Coding with Bee-Bot course take?

The course includes 13 student lessons, totaling about 8 hours of instruction. Most lessons take about 30 minutes, the patterns lesson takes about 45 minutes, and the Park Cleanup STEM project takes about 90 minutes. A teacher resource guide is also included for designing additional Bee-Bot lessons.

What materials do I need to teach Coding with Bee-Bot?

Students need access to Bee-Bot robots, which they program using the buttons on the robot's back. Each lesson includes ready-to-teach slides, and many activities have students move Bee-Bot across a grid to reach targets such as numbers, shapes, or picture cards. Some lessons suggest optional Bee-Bot jackets, which are themed covers that turn the robot into a different character.

Are Coding with Bee-Bot lessons available in Spanish?

Yes. Every student lesson in Coding with Bee-Bot includes a Spanish version of the lesson slides alongside the English slides, which supports bilingual and dual-language classrooms.
