1st grade students learn how computers work and create their first document, presentation, and spreadsheet. They practice positive online behavior and create strong passwords, explore how technology affects their community, and code a program that helps clean up litter. Students also research a topic, use data to find patterns and make predictions, and explore what AI can and cannot do by using decision trees to sort objects.
The word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet lessons show students how to use Google tools. If your school uses different software, the lessons include guidance for teachers to model the matching tools so students can follow along.
The course includes 19 teacher-led lessons, each about 45 minutes long, organized into six modules, with module quizzes to check understanding. Lessons follow an "I do, we do, you do" format and mix hands-on programming projects with unplugged activities. The course is flexible and can be taught in any order, and because concepts spiral across grade levels, students build on what they learned even if not every lesson is completed in a single year.
