What is AI Student Hints?
AI Student Hints is a student-facing helper built into CodeHS assignments. When a student gets stuck, they can ask for a hint and the AI nudges them toward the next step — a guiding question, a place to look, a concept to revisit — instead of handing over the answer. Every conversation stays focused on the exercise in front of them.
How is this different from Vibe Coding?
Vibe Coding lets students build whole programs with AI in the CodeHS Sandbox. AI Student Hints is a support tool inside the regular assignments you already teach — it helps a stuck student keep moving on their own work without doing that work for them. Many schools use both.
Does it just give students the answer?
No. Hints are designed to guide, not solve. Students choose from focused prompts like "Give me a hint," "I'm not sure where to start," "Why is my code crashing?" or "Why is the autograder failing?" — and every AI response is checked so it won't reveal the solution or near-identical code.
Can teachers see and control how students use it?
Yes. Teachers can review every hint conversation from a built-in dashboard, filtered by section or by individual student, and can turn AI Student Hints on or off for a whole section or for individual students at any time from Student Settings.
