The Rhode Island CS Proficiencies course introduces students to the six Rhode Island CS proficiency statements: Computational Thinking & Programming, Computing Systems & Networks, Cybersecurity, Data & Analysis, Digital Literacy, and Responsible Computing in Society. Through interactive lessons, hands-on projects, and engaging activities, students develop essential technical skills while exploring the role and impact of technology on individuals and society.

Computational Thinking & Programming
Students learn the basics of programming by giving Karel the Dog commands in a grid world while using problem-solving strategies to break down larger problems into smaller parts and develop, test, and evaluate solutions. |
Computing Systems & Networks
Students explore various technologies and their impact on the world while learning about network protocols, strategies to protect online information, and systematic troubleshooting techniques for hardware and software issues. |
Cybersecurity
Students learn about cybersecurity risks, physical and digital security measures, network protocols, and strategies to protect online information while practicing safe Internet etiquette. |
Data & Analysis
Students gather, analyze, and present data in various formats while exploring bias, data storage, and the use of models and simulations, culminating in a project where they collect and analyze data to answer a self-selected question. |
Digital Literacy
Students develop digital literacy skills by selecting appropriate tools, synthesizing information, and creating engaging artifacts while learning Internet safety, exploring art and technology with p5.js, and building a personal homepage using HTML and CSS. |
Responsible Computing in Society
Students learn to engage with digital tools safely and ethically, develop a positive web presence, practice Internet etiquette, and explore the opportunities, challenges, and impacts of technology on individuals and society. |
